Frequently asked questions about Beaphar CatComfort®

What are pheromones?

Pheromones are chemical compounds made by the animal itself. These substances are immediately recognizable by animals of the same species. There are different pheromones. They each cause their own instinctive reaction. Pheromones are sensed through the air by the Jacobson's Organ which is located above the palate close to your cat's nose.

Does CatComfort® make my cat sleepy?

No, your cat will not get sleepy from Beaphar CatComfort. Pheromones ensure that your cat is reassured without making it sleepy or drowsy. You also don't have to worry that your cat seems relaxed but still suffers from stress inside. That is certainly not the case with CatComfort. Which CatComfort® product should I use for my cat?

The choice of pheromone, and therefore which CatComfort® product, depends on the nature and cause of the unwanted behavior. The CatComfort® Diffuser and Spray contain the facial pheromone, which is suitable for behavior linked to the environment (for example, scratching furniture or urine marking indoors). The CatComfort® Spot-On and Diffuser contain the maternal pheromone, which gives cats a safe and secure feeling, and is especially useful for social issues (for example, conflicts with other cats or the arrival of new people or pets).

See the overview below for guidance on which product is best for different situations. In some cases, several options or a combination may work. In the table, we show the most suitable advice.

Is there a difference between the CatComfort® products?

Yes, some products work differently because they use different pheromones.

The CatComfort® Diffuser and Spray contain the facial pheromone. Cats use this to mark objects or places as safe and pleasant. These products are therefore helpful for unwanted behavior or stress related to the environment, such as urine marking, scratching furniture, or moving to a new home.

The CatComfort® Diffuser and Spot-On contain the maternal pheromone. Mother cats release this pheromone to give their kittens a safe and secure feeling. It is crucial for bonding, but is also recognized by adult cats. These products are useful for social stress, such as tension between cats or the arrival of a new family member.

For more details on which product suits which situation, see the previous question.

How does the CatComfort® Spot-On work? How are the pheromones released?

The pheromones are released by the warmth of your cat’s skin. They evaporate into the air and are detected by the Jacobson’s organ, located above the palate close to the nose. About 15 minutes after applying the Spot-On, it has warmed enough to start releasing pheromones in sufficient amounts. That’s why you should apply CatComfort® Spot-On at least 15 minutes before a stressful situation.

The substances do not enter the bloodstream. They need to stay on the skin to evaporate and be detected by the Jacobson’s organ.

Can I combine CatComfort® products, or will that be too much?

It’s not possible to overdose with pheromones. CatComfort® products can safely be combined. For example, you can use the Spot-On together with the Spray, combining the maternal and facial pheromones. This can be useful for cats that experience stress from several causes, or for extra support during fireworks.

Combining products with the same pheromone isn’t harmful, but it won’t make the effect stronger.

I have several pets at home. What if they lick the Spot-On liquid from each other?

Don’t worry, this won’t harm the animals. However, it may reduce the effectiveness of the product if it happens immediately after application.

Can I combine CatComfort® with No Stress tablets during New Year’s Eve?

Yes. If your cat is very anxious and you already use CatComfort® but want extra support for New Year’s Eve, you can also give Beaphar No Stress Tablets. These tablets contain calming herbs and have a short-term soothing effect. They can safely be used together.

Another option is to combine CatComfort® products with different pheromones. For example, if you use the Spot-On, you can also add the Spray or Diffuser, and vice versa. If you already use the CatComfort® Excellence Diffuser, you don’t need to add the Spray or Spot-On, as the Diffuser already contains both pheromones.

Are there situations where CatComfort® doesn’t help enough?

Not all unwanted behavior in cats is caused by stress. In those cases, Beaphar CatComfort® may only have a limited effect.

For example:

  • Urinating outside the litter box can also be caused by having too few litter trays or trays that are difficult to access.

  • Urine marking or excessive meowing can also result from a medical condition.

It’s important to understand why your cat is showing certain behavior in order to solve it properly. A behaviorist can help in some cases. To rule out medical causes, we recommend consulting a veterinarian.

Can I use CatComfort® together with other Beaphar products, like flea treatments?

Yes, you can. There are no interactions between CatComfort® and other products. Just make sure to follow the instructions carefully. The Spot-On should always be applied on the head between the ears, never in the same place as flea drops.

How long does it take for the CatComfort® Diffuser to work?

The Diffuser needs around 24 hours to spread the pheromones fully throughout the room. If possible, plug it in at least one day before a stressful situation.

What happens if my cat gets wet after applying the Spot-On?

If the Spot-On comes into contact with water, the pheromones may be washed away. In this case, it’s best to apply a new pipette after your cat has been swimming or bathed.

Is the liquid in CatComfort® Spot-On dangerous for children?

No, the CatComfort® liquid is not toxic, even after application on your cat. The warning “keep out of reach of children” is a general safety precaution that must appear on the packaging.
