What can cause joint stiffness in my dog

There are various factors that can cause stiffness in dogs. Your dog could be getting a day older or could have suffered a slight strain on the joints. Just be aware that joint stiffness can occur in dogs of all ages and breeds. It is important to identify the underlying cause of stiffness to provide appropriate care. Here are some common reasons for stiffness in dogs:

1. Arthritis
Most pets develop arthritis as a result of an underlying joint problem that developed earlier in life. Arthritis is a chronic and progressive disease that affects the entire joint but is mostly associated with the deterioration and loss of cartilage, leading to inflammation, pain, stiffness, decreased mobility and poor quality of life.

2. Hip dysplasia
Some (larger) dog breeds are prone to hip dysplasia, an abnormal formation of the hip socket that, in its more severe form, can eventually cause lameness and arthritis of the joints. It is a genetic trait that is affected by environmental factors. Hip dysplasia can result in stiffness, pain, and lameness.

3. Injuries
Traumatic injuries such as sprains, strains, or fractures, can cause stiffness in dogs. Joint injuries, in particular, can lead to long-term stiffness.

4. Ligament or tendon issues
Damage to ligaments or tendons, often due to overexertion or injury, can result in stiffness and difficulty moving.

5. Spinal problems
Issues with the spine, such as intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), can cause stiffness and affect a dog's ability to move comfortably.

6. Infections
Infections affecting the joints, such as Lyme disease, can lead to stiffness and lameness.

7. Obesity
Excess weight can put strain on a dog’s joints, leading to stiffness and arthritis.

8. Age-related changes
As dogs age, they may experience natural wear and tear on their joints, leading to stiffness and arthritis.

I think my dog has joint stiffness

The treatment for dogs that are experiencing stiffness and inflammation will vary depending on the underlying condition. It is recommended to consult with a veterinarian for a proper diagnosis. In case of arthritis, a treatment plan will be made. The aim of this treatment plan is to help your dog enjoy walking and hiking painlessly again as quickly as possible.
