Questions about Small Animals Hygiene

  • How can you tell the difference between mange and ringworm in guinea pigs?
  • This can be very difficult. In mange, the hairs usually break off at the base, whereas in ringworm, they often break off part way down the shaft. Mange is most common in autumn (often brought on by the stress caused when moving animals indoors for the winter). Mange is more common than ringworm, so treat affected animals for this first with Beaphar Anti-Mange Spray. If no improvement is seen after a week, a ringworm treatment can be applied.

For a definite diagnosis, your vet will need to take a skin scraping to examine under a microscope and/or examine affected animals under UV light (which causes ringworm to fluoresce).
