Questions about Dogs Worms

  • Can humans catch worms from dogs?

  • Yes, certain worms are capable of being transmitted from dogs to humans; such worms are said to have a ‘zoonotic potential’. The dog roundworm, Toxocara canis, is one such worm. Human infection may occur if a person swallows the microscopic worm eggs having picked them up from the environment.

Children are more at risk from catching roundworms in this way, and could become infected whilst playing in sand pits or on grass where dog faeces have not been picked up.

This is why it is so important to pick up after your dog and to worm your dog once every three months. You can read more about the importance of worming in our blog.
