Questions about Dogs Worms

  • Q
My dog has been sick after worming - what should I do?
  • A
If your dog is sick immediately after worming, it is probable that the worming treatment will not have been absorbed into your dog's system. You will need to repeat the worming treatment in a couple of days’ time when your dog’s tummy has settled.
  • Q
Can you worm a pregnant dog?
  • A
No, we do not recommend worming your dog during pregnancy. We strongly recommend speaking with your vet if you wish to worm your pregnant dog, as they can carry out a risk/benefit assessment.
  • Q
What are the symptoms of worms in dogs?
  • A
The symptoms of worms in dogs can vary in their intensity. In young puppies they can be more obvious. In adult dogs symptoms of worms are rarely seen. The symptoms an owner is most likely to see are worms or worm segments in the faeces.
  • Q
Can humans catch worms from dogs?
  • A
Yes, certain worms are capable of being transmitted from dogs to humans; such worms are said to have a ‘zoonotic potential’.
  • Q
What type of worms can harm my dog?
  • A
There are two common types of worms; roundworms and tapeworms. Both these worms have the potential to harm your dog.
  • Q
How do I know if my dog has worms?
  • A
It can be difficult to know if your dog has worms as often there are no outward signs. Most dogs are born with worms, and your dog will encounter new sources of infection every time they go for a walk.
  • Q
How often should I worm my puppy?
  • A
Puppies are often born with worms or infected through their mother's milk. Puppies need to be wormed at 2 weeks of age and then re-treated at 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 weeks to ensure continued freedom from worms.
