Questions about Dogs Fleas

  • How do I get rid of fleas in my house?

  • Vacuuming is the first line of defense against a flea infestation - but be sure to empty your cleaner OUTSIDE, or the you will be back where you started from!
  • You then need to chose an effective household treatment, such as Beaphar Defest or Beaphar FLEAtec Household Flea Spray . Be sure to treat every room that your pet has had access to, and follow the directions on the can. Pay particular attention to skirting boards and around/under static furniture, as these areas are where fleas like to hide.
  • Remove and wash any soft furnishings that you can, together with pet bedding - any fleas lurking here will end up down the drain. Depending on where your pet is allowed to go, you will need to consider treating non-washable soft furnishings. Fleas are unlikely to be in family beds, unless you let your pet sleep on or in the bed. If you do, change all the bedding, vacuum and turn the mattress before you spray the carpets. We do not advise that you spray the mattress.
  • It is quite likely that you will continue to see fleas for some time after you have treated. This is because a proportion of the flea population will be in its pupal stage, during which time the fleas are pretty much impervious to insecticides. When these pupae hatch out, they may been seen in the house or on a pet until they have encountered the treated areas and succumb to the insecticide. Regular vacuuming stimulates the pupae to hatch out, so vacuum every day, if you can.  At certain times of year (often in late summer or early autumn), a large number of pupal stages may be present in a house. This being the case, it may take several weeks before the fleas come under control.
