Questions about Small Animals Parasites & Disease

  • How can I tell the difference between mange and ringworm?
  • This can be very difficult to diagnose. In mange, the hairs typically break off at the base, whereas in ringworm, they often break off part way down the shaft of the hair. Mange is most common in autumn (often brought on by the stress caused when moving animals indoors for the winter). Mange is more common than ringworm, so treat affected animals for this first with an Anti-Mange treatment. If no improvement is seen after a wee, a ringworm treatment can be applied. For a definite diagnosis, your vet will need to take a skin scraping to examine under a microscope and/or examine affected animals under UV lights, which causes ringworm to flouresce).
